Named for the technique that makes it. Filigrana is the Venetian method of laying fine rods of colored glass into a molten body and blowing the whole thing out together, so the lines stretch and curve with the form instead of sitting on top of it. Look closely at the stripes on this lantern: they run pole to pole, converging at the top and gathering to a point at the base, narrowing and widening exactly as the glass swells. They are in the glass, not painted on it.
The body is warm opal white, dense enough to hide the bulb completely. Lit, the white glows evenly and the colored canes read as fine dark lines drawn across a lantern of light. Unlit, it is a pale striped sphere — still an object worth looking at, which is more than most glass pendants manage in daylight.

Where to hang it
Size A works in multiples — two or three in a row over a kitchen island or a long table, spaced 24 to 30 inches apart — or singly beside a bed, where its upright form suits a narrow space. Size B is a single-fixture proposition: centred over a dining table of up to about 54 inches, or in a living room where its width can be seen. Hang the base of the glass 30 to 34 inches above a tabletop, 30 to 36 inches above a counter. Because the glass is opal rather than clear, it gives genuinely soft, glare-free light directly below — usable over a table rather than purely atmospheric.

What bulb does it take?
An E27 screw-base bulb — 10 W for size A, 15 W for size B. In North America, E26 bulbs fit E27 sockets. Choose 2700K warm white; cool white turns the opal body grey and flattens the stripe colors.
Can you see the bulb through the glass?
No. The opal white body is fully diffusing, so the bulb is hidden and the whole shade glows evenly. This is why it works over a dining table, where a clear shade would put a bright filament in everyone's eye line.
